….SAW PALMETTO
Serenoa repens (seeds)
Saw Palmetto is a small shrubby, creeping palm native to southern regions of North America. The leaves have sharp spiny edges which can cut the clothing or legs of those unfortunate to come in contact with it, hence the common name of Saw Palmetto. The fruit is the part used in medicine. Its actions (anti-inflammatory, endocrine agent, spasmolytic, possibly antiandrogenic) show it to be of benefit for the following:
Benign prostatic hyperplasia, acute and chronic prostatitis; improving gonadal function and hormone output in men and women, impotence, male sterility, female infertility, irritable bladder symptoms and trigonitis, general debility and cachexia. Traditionally used for upper and lower respiratory problems, atrophy of the breast, ovaries and testes as well as B.P.H. It was described as the “old man’s friend”. It was also used for inflamed gonads in the male or female and as an aphrodisiac. It has also been shown to reduce the conversion to testosterone to DHT via 5-alpha-reductase inhibition (which is very beneficial for acne sufferers); reduce serum SHBG levels (very beneficial for women with P.C.O.S.).
In 2004 an updated meta-analysis of 14 randomsed clinical trials and 3 open-label trials involving 4280 patients found a significant improvement in peak flow rate and a reduction in nocturia above placebo, together with a 5-point reduction in the Internaltional Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS). A comparison with the alpha-blocker tamsulosin in the treatment of severe lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) associated with BPH found that saw palmetto was slightly superior to the drug. The study involved 124 patients with severe LUTS who were followed for 12 months and were randomly assigned to receive either 320mg/day of Saw Palmetto. After 12 months the total IPSS score decreased by 7.8 with saw palmetto treatment and 5.8 with tamsulosin. The irritative symptoms improved significantly more with saw palmetto (-2.9 versus -1.9 with tamsulosin).
NETTLE ROOT
Urtica dioica (herb foliage & root)
Nettle originates from Britain, Northern Europe and Asia, now found wild in New Zealand. It’s fibres have been used for centuries to make shrouds, sailcloth, sacking, cordage and fishing nets. During WWI it was used as a cotton substitute in German Uniforms. As well as fibre it is used as a dye, due to it’s rich source of chlorophyll it has a beautiful green which is used with fabric, foods and soap making. Roman soldiers were believed to beat themselves with Nettle to encourage surface blood circulation so they would stay warm in the freezing temperatures in Britain.
Following are some of the many health conditions Urtica dioica has been reported to have benefit:
All skin conditions, allergies, anaemia, asthma, bacterial infections, coughing up of blood, diabetes, eczema, fatigue, fungal infections, gout, haemorrhoids, hayfever, kidney stones, lung infections, melaena, menorrhagia, milk production, nosebleeds, osteoarthritis, poor circulation, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, shingles, sinusitis, sore muscles, stomach complaints, ulcers, urinary infections, worms & wounds.
In Germany Nettle Root has been traditionally used for the treatment of inflammations of the urinary tract, for the prevention of urinary lithiasis and for the treatment of BPH. Nettle Root has shown in studies to increase urine flow, B.P.H., ejaculation and impotence especially when combined with Saw Palmetto. The root has also been used to treat chronic skin eruptions and bowel disorders. A double-blind placebo-controlled trial investigated the efficacy of nettle root in the long-term treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. International prostatic symptom score (IPSS) was significantly decreased after nettle root treatment unlike those treated with placebo. (IPSS quantitatively assesses the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms: decreased force of stream, intermittency, incomplete emptying, straining; and the impact of storage symptoms: frequency, urgency, nocturia.) There were fewer urinary infections and adverse effects in the nettle root group.
CLEAVERS
Galium aparine (herb foliage)
The lymphatic system is one of the places in our body where fat (toxins within the fat) is stored. Cleavers (G.aparine) helps with removal of this out of the lymphatic system and removal via the digestive and urinary system where it supports the kidneys. We can assist cleavers further by exercising as physical movement is our lymphatic systems way of cleaning itself out.
CALENDULA
Calendula officinalis (flower)
Also helps with cleansing the lymphatic system, as well as the liver & urinary system, supporting the prostate for BPH as well as anti-cancer effects see link to study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/?term=calendula+prostate
