Painkillers Giving you Headaches?

Feverfew & Ginger shown to provide migraine & headache relief.  Migraine is a complex neurobiological disease characterised by headache, nausea, photophobia (intolerance of bright light), phono phobia (intolerance of noise and speech), autonomic nasal symptoms, muscle pain, and cognitive disruption.  Some attacks require bed rest, while others cause only milk or limited disability.  Because oral medications don’t work for all migraine sufferers and because prescription medications are associated with adverse events, high costs, and quantity limits, there is a need for affordable, effective, alternative treatments.
The double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study reviewed the efficacy of a feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) and ginger (Zingiber officinale) rhizome formulation.  All in the study met criteria for International Headache Society migraine with or without aura, and had a history of migraine for more than 1 year.  They had experienced between 2-6 attacks per month during the previous 3 months with at least 75% of their attacks begun with a mild headache.  They were advised to treat all migraine attacks over the 1 month period regardless of the intensity.
Of those using the feverfew/ginger mix 32% reported being pain-free at 2 hrs post-dose compared to 16% using placebo.  At 2hrs post-dose the percentage of attacks rated as ‘No Pain’ or ‘Mild Pain” was 64% compared to 39% for placebo.  Pain levels were significantly lower for those taking feverfew/ginger and following symptoms were reduced/eliminated in some:  the pulsating character of the headache; the worsening of headache with activity; the presence of light sensitivity; sound-sensitivity and nausea.
The authors concluded that this study supported the efficacy of the feverfew/ginger combination in the acute treatment of migraine when administered early in the migraine attack.  This is great news for all who suffer nearly every day with this debilitating condition.
