The Guarani Indians of Paraguay have used for many centuries, they call it Caa-ehe, Azuca-caa, Kaa-he-e, Ca-a-yupe. Used for flavour enhancement, a tea and medicinal treatment. Discovered by WEstern Society in 1899 by M.S. Bertoni. Nutritionally contains: Vitamin C, Beta-carotene, Calcium, Chromium, Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin B1, B2 & B3, Phosphorus, Potassium, Selenium Silica & Zinc.
Medicinally has:
• Hypoglycaemic action, helpful for hypoglycaemia & diabetes, it nourishes the pancreas & helps to restore pancreatic function (does not lower those with normal blood glucose levels).
• Cardiovascular action, possibly produce a mild strengthening of the heart & vascular system, possible lowering of high blood pressure.
• Anti-microbial action, inhibits the growth and reproduction of bacteria & other infectious organisms; lower incidence of colds & flu; active against Streptococcus mutans, Pseudomonas aerugions, Proteus vulgaris as well as lowering the incidence of dental caries.
• Topically found to be healing for acne, seborrhoea, dermatitis, psoriasis. Placed directly into wounds & cuts it speeds up healing time & less scaring is observed.
