By the 19th Century it had over 40 different common names in English alone, the more whimsical ones: ‘Hig candlewick’, ‘Bullicks lungwort’, ‘Adams rod’, ‘Feltwort’, ‘Hare’s beard’, ‘Shepherds Club’, ‘Our Lady’s Flannel’ and more. Verbascum a corruption of ‘barbascum’ from Latin ‘barba’ (a beard) was bestowed by Linnaeus.
Dioscorides used over 2000 years ago for pulmonary (lung) disease and this is still the primary use of Mullein today. As well as the lungs it’s been found to soothe an inflamed digestive tract as well as help relieve migraines and headaches. Linked to witches, as being the plant to use to ward off curses and evil spirits. Dried leaves and hair were mixed together to make candlewicks; leaves were put into shoes to help insulate them; dried stems were dipped into suet to make torches & ashes of the plant made into soap will restore hair which has become grey to it’s original colour!
