Even found in King Tut’s tomb, it was to be taken to the next live where it was made into a drink called ‘maisus’. Many Hindus believe it to increase sexual vigour when drunk with milk & sugar. While traditional Chinese medicine use as part of cancer treatment, it’s known largely in western society for its use in the manufacture of the “candy licorice”, flavouring tobacco & as a foaming agent in fire extinguishers & beer.
Its name Glycyrrhiza comes from the Greek ‘glukos’ meaning sweet, and ‘riza’ meaning root. It was used to alleviate the bad effects of highly spiced, overcooked food & contaminated meat. During the reign of Edward I in 1305 a tax was put on all licorice imports to help repair the London Bridge. Traditionally within Sambuca, Ouzo & Anisseco.
Known to help with many health conditions, strengthening adrenal glands during times of stress, soothing inflammed lungs.
