Its Latin name comes from “Mithridales Eupator, King of Pontus”. The Common name Joe-pye Weed comes from a New England Indian Joy-Pye who became famous by curing typhus with Eupatorium purpureum. The root/rhizomes of E.purpureum are used medicinally to treat, its Active Constituents are:

• Volatile Oil
• Flavonoids
• Resin
• Tannins
• Saponins

Main Actions are:

• Diuretic – (an agent that increases the secretion and flow of urine)
• Anti-lithic – (an agent used to prevent the formation of calculi/stones in the urinary system)
• Anti-rheumatic – (an agent that brings relief to joints & connective tissue suffering pain & inflammation)
• Astringent – (a binding agent that contracts organic tissue, reducing secretions or discharges of mucous and fluid from the body)
• Diaphoretic – (an agent that promotes perspiration)
• Febrifuge – (an agent that reduces or eliminates fevers)
• Nervine – (an agent that has a calming or soothing effect on the nerves, acting to restore the nerves to their natural state)
