More Info…

Pliny (1st Century CE) recorded at least 22 uses, one being taken by Roman soldiers to stay healthy. In Greece it was named ‘Marathon’ as it grew prolifically near the village of Marathon, close to Athens. Pliny also believed that serpents ate and rubbed against fennel as it was able to improve their eyesight after shedding their skins. In the 13th Century it was used as an appetite suppressant. Puritans in U.S.A. would bring in their hanky filled with fennel seeds to nibble on to stave off hunger during long services. It was believed to ward off evil spirits, hung over doors of cottages to prevent witchcraft and was inserted into keyholes to protect from dwelling ghosts during Midsummers Eve.
