Imported into Europe since 1953, becoming more popular in Europe since the Hottentot rebellion in 1904, G.A. Menhert saw a Hottentot that was given up as lost by doctors, recover when treated by a local witch doctor. Menhert discovered that Devils Claw was this cure. The curved spines on the outside of the fruit give it its latin name (Greek harpagos – a grappling hook), common names being wood spider & grapple plant. Devil’s Claw is used as an anti-inflammatory for joints, relieving pain, digestive disturbances, allergic reactions, migraines, febrile illnesses, tendinitis, indigestion, loss of appetite, flatulence, hypertension, arrythmias, cancer, fibromyalgia. Externally for healing ulcers, wounds, lesions and boils. A study of 630 patients with various rheumatic illnesses, after 6 months of treatment 80% of patients experienced significant improvement in symptoms. It’s analgesic properties can be compared in strength to cortisone, vioxx and phenylbutazone.
