Clove has a warm, strong, spicy smell, native to India, Indonesia and the Malacca Islands. Used by the Greeks, Romans and Chinese to ease toothache, as a breath sweetener. Its antiseptic properties helping with prevention of contagious diseases such as the plague. Archeologists found cloves within a ceramic vessel in Syria dating back to 1721 B.C. Highly prized in Roman times, cloves have been traded for many years. In the 17th and 18th centuries cloves were worth at least their weight in gold due to the high price of importing them. Clove has many actions including stimulant, carminative, anti-septic, disinfectant, insecticide, anti-spasmodic, mental & physical stimulant, analgesic, aphrodisiac, anti-emetic, antibacterial, anti-fungal, expectorant, anti-viral and anti-neuralgic.
