Burdock, also known as Bardana, Beggars Buttons, Fox Clove, Clot bur, Gobo, Niu Bung Zi, Happy Major.

Traditionally used for many health conditions including constipation, easing childbirth, breaking up kidney and bladder stones, promoting sweating, arthritis and gout pain, colds and flu, throat and chest conditions, syphilis, leprosy, abscesses, detoxification and cleansing, to stimulate cellular regeneration. In Japan is is known as “Poor man’s Potatoes” and it is eaten as a vegetable. It has a reputation as an aphrodisiac and due to this has often been presented to bride and groom as a honeymoon joke! Native Americans would often cook the stem in maple syrup and it would be stored to be eaten over winter. They also used it for arthritis pain, to purify the blood and whooping cough. Burdocks main actions are in its ability to help the body rid itself of toxins. Opening up channels of excretion i.e. bowel, kidneys, lungs, and skin. Used wherever chronic accumulation of waste/toxins sets up inflammation i.e. rheumatism, gout, arthritis, eczema, boils, psoriasis, acne, liver damage, swelling of joints and more.

Nowadays burdock is used for all manner of skin disease i.e. eczema, psoriasis, acne, boils and more as well as all chronic inflammatory conditions, as a blood purifier, for strengthening hair, bringing relief to an itch scalp, dandruff, ridding the body of ringworm/parasites as well as being part of cancer treatment. Rich in vitamins A, B2, B3, C, E, Bioflavonoids, Iron, Calcium, Copper, Iodine, Silica, Sulphur, Zinc and PABA. Arctiin within has been shown to have an effect on relaxing smooth muscle Arctigenin shown to have an inhibitory effect on tumor growth. German practitioner Hildegard of Bingen (1098 – 1179) used Burdock to treat cancer, this was also being used on the other side of the world in America and Canada by Native Indian Tribes as part of their cancer treatments, this information was also passed onto Rene Caisse (1888 – 1978) where she blended with 4 other herbs (Slippery Elm, Turkey Rhubarb & Sheep Sorrel) to use as an amazing cancer treatment.
