Used in medicine since the Middle Ages, Hildegard von Bingen 900 years ago was a big promoter of its use. In WWII Bilberry jam was used by RAF pilots to improve their night vision. Since then scientists began investigations into its effects and its anthocyanins on vision. Bilberry was shown to hasten regeneration of rhodopsin (visual purple), rhodopsin must be quickly regenerated in order to maintain visual sensitivity. Bilberry was shown in trials with air traffic controllers, pilots and automobile drives to improve adaption to the dark, improving night vision. Rich in vitamins C, E, and minerals manganese, phosphorus, Iron, Zinc, Magnesium, Potassium, Selenium, Calcium, Sodium, Silica and Chromium. Shown to help improve cross linkage of fibbers, reduce free radical oxidation, inhibit the enzyme that breaks down collagen and promote the synthesis of collagen, hence increased strength of capillaries, improved joint flexibility as well as a multitude of other health conditions such as:
