Triclosan - an antimicrobial chemical used commonly in soaps, toothpaste, facial cleansers, dishwashing liquid, shaving creams, mouthwash, lip glosses, mascaras, moisturizers, foundations, deodorants, acne creams, toys, sanitizing lotions and many other personal care products.  A recent study evaluated the effects of triclosan in female rats and it was found to advance the age at which the rats hit puberty and that their blood levels of thyroid hormone concentrations were also suppressed.  "In conclusion, triclosan affected estrogen-mediated responses in the pubertal and weaning female rat and also suppressed thyroid hormone in both studies"

Triclosan is used to help reduce or prevent bacterial contamination commonly seen in "antibacterial soaps and body washes"  From the study above it is possible with continued use of a multitude of personal care products that are in touch with our skin (our largest absorbing organ) that younger members of the family (boys as well as girls) may reach puberty at a much younger age than normal as well as us all being at risk of an increase of breast cancer, lowered metabolism i.e. energy levels decreased, increased LDL cholesterol, increased risk of depression/anxieties, excessive weight gain, dry skin, brittle hair & nails due to triclosan lowering the amount of thyroid hormones.

In 2000 the "American Medical Association" (AMA) stated "No data exist to support their (triclosan) efficacy when used in such products or any need for them,.."

Triclosan has already been detected in the urine of 3/4's of the U.S. population, which means urgent action or change needs to be made.  The AMA also stated that there is no evidence that triclosan-containing antibacterial products outperform the good-old-fashioned techniques like washing with soap and water.  There is, however, evidence that natural handmade soap is more effective than its antibacterial counterparts.

So what do we do?  Read our labels, when you see Triclosan put it back on the shelf.  Buy 100% natural products, such as our Goats Milk, Charcoal, Classic Collection Soaps & Shaving Soaps as well as Body Butters, Facial Serums, Lip Balms & Body Oils.  To start going 100% natural Click on the following links:

Hot Tea May Lower MRSA Risk

Researchers led by Eric M. Matheson, MD, from the Department of Family Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, looked into the anti-microbial effects of several commonly consumed plants and their extracts.  They found that those who drink hot tea are half as likely to have methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in their nasal passages as those who don't, giving us a safe, inexpensive, and easily accessible way to decrease MRSA.

The study included 5555 people that drunk either tea, iced tea, coffee or soda.  They collected nasal cultures from all participants and assessed them for S. aureus, and compared this to their consumption levels of the above drinks, as well as other variables i.e. age, race, sex, poverty, health status, recent hospital stay, and antibiotic use.

They found those who consumed hot tea had less than half the likelihood of having MRSA nasal carriage compared with those who did not consume hot tea (odds ratio, 0.47; 95% confidence interval, 0.31 - 0.70).  After adjusting for confounders, hot tea drinkers still had a lower likelihood of MRSA nasal carriage.

This is good news for all tea drinkers out there, we can enjoy that extra cup of tea over winter knowing that we are protecting ourselves immunity wise.  For those who are visiting a friend in hospital what a perfect gift to give, the gift of tea, helping to get them better even quicker.

Headache & Migraine Relief is Here!

A recent medical study published in "Headache", the journal of the American Headache Society, found that Feverfew and Ginger is a safe, well tolerated, and effective first-line treatment for headaches as well as preventing more serious attacks.

Lead study author Roger K. Cady MD director of the Headache Care Centre in Springfield, Missouri said that it's a welcome additional treatment and he would go so far as to say treatment with the herbal combination was not dissimilar in effect to pharmaceutical triptans.  A significant number of people in the study found relief and restoration of function, having improvement in all the associated symptoms including symptoms of pain.

The study, included 60 patients aged between 13 to 60 years.  These subjects met criteria for International Headache Society migraine with or without aura, had migraines for more than a year, and had had between 2 and 6 attacks per month during the previous 3 months.  They were randomly assigned a combination of Feverfew and Ginger or a Placebo.

Participants were asked to treat all migraine attacks over 1 month and were encouraged to initiate treatment when the headache was mild and likely to be more disabling if left untreated.  They were also asked to keep detailed headache diaries.

The study found that at 2 hours after dosing 32.19% of the treatment group reported being pain free which was more than double that of the placebo group.  63.7% of the attacks were reported as having nor or mild pain versus 38.6% for the placebo.  This is a significant result.

The Feverfew-Ginger mix was also statistically superior to placebo in eliminating disabling features of headaches, including their pulsating nature, worsening with activity, and accompanying light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, and nausea.

Dr Marc Wasseman, MD, a neurologist in Flossmoor, Illinois and a member of the American Academy of Neurology said "…this product is definitely something his patients would be interested in."  and that "…research into alternative medications, like feverfew …and magnesium, is extremely helpful and should be pursued aggressively"
